euan francis gubbins – aviary of songs (2024)

Hey, I really think you’d like this one.

It was a happy accident. I was searching for “Gingerbee’s – Apiary” (don’t worry about that, I will recommend it to you soon enough), and of course I had an aneurysm and couldn’t remember ought but my few misremembered words brought me to this!!! Terrific right?

It is very tender but still interesting and not overtly-personal that would make you cringe. It’s definitely something I would put on to listen to before going to bed.

“concerning adventures” has an untuned piano that sits perfectly with his guitar and voice in a very snug tender way. I think you’d really love that. He doesn’t shy away from dissonant timbres and leans into their charm and utilizes them perfectly.

His sense of harmony reminds me a bit of Syd-Barrett-era Floyd. I can’t make my mind up if you would agree with me on that.

It was also one of those instances where I was completely infatuated with the album cover. I like such compound compositions with everyday objects. I was thrilled that the music was equally interesting.

He plays all the instruments on this, except the clarinet on “1909.” I am thinking of getting one to play and record. I need a wind instrument in my life again. I know, it’s insane that I miss it, you’d be happy to know you were right.

I like his instrumentations, they are subtle and interesting. He sounds a bit like a UK Yoggs. But you never got to meet him.

I hope you are sleeping well.
